During the 2025 DHR Health Fashion Show & Gala Honoring Heroic Patients, held on October 15 at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, Dr. Paul A. Berry, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with DHR Health, was recognized for his commitment to excellence in breast reconstruction and compassionate patient care. The event, hosted by DHR Health under the theme “A Celebration of Strength, Courage, and Empowerment,” highlighted the work of physicians who help breast cancer survivors reclaim their confidence and sense of self after treatment.

Dr. Berry, a member of DHR Health’s Plastic and Reconstructive Institute and part of the Breast Center of Excellence, shared reflections on the importance of teamwork and patient trust in the reconstructive process. He emphasized that breast reconstruction represents more than a medical procedure; it is a critical step in restoring a woman’s physical and emotional well-being following mastectomy. “Every patient’s journey is unique,” Dr. Berry said. “Our role as reconstructive surgeons is to guide them through the healing process with understanding, respect, and care, so they feel whole again.”

His comments reinforced DHR Health’s commitment to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care through collaboration among surgeons, oncologists, nurses, and support staff. Dr. Berry acknowledged that successful outcomes depend not only on surgical skill but also on the compassionate partnership between patients and their healthcare team.

Throughout the evening, Dr. Berry’s name was mentioned with deep appreciation by both the event’s hosts and the patients who had undergone reconstruction under his care. The Master of Ceremonies introduced him as one of the leading reconstructive surgeons at DHR Health, noting his dedication to advancing techniques that help women regain confidence after breast cancer surgery. The MC described Dr. Berry and his colleagues, Dr. Mauricio De La Garza and Dr. Ali Kilic, as “compassionate physicians who provide hope and healing to patients,” and thanked them for their expertise and humanity.

Several breast cancer survivors who modeled in the fashion show also expressed their gratitude for Dr. Berry’s care. Susanna Gonzalez, age 66, shared her personal journey and the vital role Dr. Berry played in her recovery. “I had chemo, a double mastectomy, and reconstructive surgery with Dr. Berry,” she said. “I want to thank God and I want to thank Dr. Berry for being here for me because it’s hard what we women go through. But as long as you have faith in the Lord, He can put His hands on Dr. Berry’s hands so I could have the surgery that I had.” Gonzalez’s words reflected the trust and comfort she found in her surgeon’s guidance.

Another patient, Juanita Garcia, who has been navigating her breast cancer journey since 2002, spoke with admiration and affection for Dr. Berry. “I’d like to take a moment for my doctor, Dr. Berry. I’m glad I met him. I’m very satisfied with him, and we still have a little ways to go, but we’ll get there together,” she said. Garcia smiled as she described him as her “fairy with a magic wand,” crediting him for his skill and compassion throughout her treatment process.

The MC later referred to Dr. Berry’s relationship with his patients as a reflection of DHR Health’s mission to blend advanced medical care with empathy and understanding. “Our physicians are not only surgeons — they are partners in healing,” the MC said, highlighting how Dr. Berry’s approach represents the values of DHR Health’s Breast Center of Excellence.

Dr. Berry’s work is part of DHR Health’s broader initiative to expand access to breast reconstruction in the Rio Grande Valley, ensuring that women who undergo mastectomy are aware of their options and supported throughout their recovery. His practice emphasizes personalized treatment planning, patient education, and the integration of advanced surgical techniques that prioritize both function and aesthetic restoration.

By the end of the evening, it was clear that Dr. Berry’s influence extends far beyond the operating room. His patients’ heartfelt words and the respect of his colleagues underscored a legacy built on compassion, skill, and dedication to helping women heal not only physically but emotionally. As one of the event’s most warmly acknowledged physicians, Dr. Paul A. Berry embodies the spirit of DHR Health’s mission — to restore confidence, dignity, and hope to every patient he serves.
