EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health, one of the largest physician-owned hospitals in the United States, proudly serving the Rio Grande Valley since 1997, is excited to welcome Dr. Joaquin Michel to its esteemed team of urologists at the DHR Health Urology Institute. Michel is passionate about improving patients’ quality of life and is dedicated to providing compassionate, comprehensive care for a wide range of urologic conditions. He treats urinary and pelvic conditions such as kidney stones, prostate enlargement, and cancers of the kidney, bladder, and prostate, with expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques and evidence based treatment approaches.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Michel to our Urology Institute,” said Marissa Castañeda, senior executive vice president at DHR Health. “His outstanding training, research background, and commitment to culturally responsive care makes him an excellent addition to our team as we continue to expand advanced urologic services for our community.”

Michel earned his Bachelor of Science in Physiology from the University of California at Davis. He went on to earn his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. Following medical school, he completed a general surgery internship and urology residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida.

Throughout his career, Michel has been active in research, authoring and co-authoring numerous peer-reviewed publication on topics including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal mass biopsy, and urologic oncology outcomes. He has presented his work at national and international conferences, including the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology.

In addition to his clinical and research expertise, Michel has a strong background in teaching and mentorship, having served as a tutor for physician assistant and nursing students as well as a USMLE Step 1 tutor for medical students. His dedication to culturally responsive care has been recognized through several merit-based awards, including the Oliver Golsmith Scholarship for Culturally Responsive Care and the Dean’s Leadership in Health and Science Scholarship from UCLA.

I am fully committed to providing the highest quality urologic care possible, always placing your safety, comfort, and quality of life in the center of my approach”
