EDINBURG, Texas — DHR Health, in partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation Central and South Texas, will host a free community education seminar Aug. 15 focused on epilepsy and supporting adults living with the condition.
“A Road Map to Care: A Journey with Epilepsy” will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, 118 Paseo Del Prado. The event is open to the public.
The conference will provide adults living with epilepsy, their families and caregivers with information on seizure recognition, safe seizure response, treatment options, medication management, lifestyle considerations and support at home, work and in the community.
“Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, yet it remains widely misunderstood,” said Dr. Leonel Estofan, DHR Health epileptologist, medical director of the DHR Health Epilepsy Center and organizer of the event. “Through education and collaboration, we can empower individuals living with epilepsy to lead safer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives while strengthening the support network throughout the Rio Grande Valley.”
Estofan will discuss epilepsy, seizure types, diagnosis and common misconceptions. Neurologist Dr. Klarysa Torres Gomez will address epilepsy in older adults.
DHR Health neurosurgeon Dr. Juan Torres-Reveron will discuss advanced treatments for drug-resistant epilepsy, including surgery, laser ablation and neurostimulation therapies. DHR Health neuropsychologist Dr. Eduardo Estevis will address memory, mood, sleep, anxiety, depression and cognitive rehabilitation.
Melissa Valle, LMSW, will discuss community resources, disability benefits, accommodations and transition of care. The program will conclude with an “Ask the Experts” session featuring a live audience question-and-answer discussion with the multidisciplinary epilepsy team.
