On May 21, 2025, the DHR Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute hosted a heartwarming reunion at the Edinburg Conference Center. The event brought together bariatric surgery patients, physicians, and supporters for an evening that celebrated the journeys of ten individuals who reclaimed their health through the institute’s comprehensive weight loss program. Part celebration, part fashion show, and wholly inspiring, the evening highlighted the lifelong support and community that DHR Health offers to its patients.
Ten former bariatric surgery patients took to the runway to share their stories and model new outfits by Macy’s, courtesy of DHR Health. Each patient walked the stage with a renewed sense of confidence, reflecting not only their physical transformations but also the mental and emotional growth that has defined their post-surgery journeys. Their stories were diverse, ranging from young adults fighting inherited health risks to parents hoping to live longer for their children and seasoned professionals discovering a new lease of life.

One of the evening’s first speakers, Juan Candanoza, recounted beginning his journey in 2022. Motivated by both physical and mental health challenges and a desire to be present for his family, Juan highlighted the unexpected gift of restored self-esteem and renewed energy. Others echoed this sentiment, including Minerva, who spoke candidly about a lifelong struggle with weight and the newfound joy she experiences through fitness and personal growth.
Jennifer Ramirez, a mother of four, shared her story of losing 167 pounds after undergoing surgery. Her heartfelt tribute to her family, her surgical team, and the support that fuels success in bariatric care. In a similar vein, Fermin Lopez, a former law enforcement officer and military veteran, detailed his shift from taking multiple medications to completing full marathons and half-Ironman triathlons. He was joined by his wife, Diana Lopez, who underwent her weight loss surgery nearly nine years ago and spoke about regaining physical mobility and mental resilience.
The emotional climax of the night came when Dr. Delisa Guadarrama, a double-boarded psychiatrist and DHR Health board member, walked the runway. A former patient of the very institute she now helps lead. Dr. Guadarrama shared her deeply personal journey of losing over 100 pounds and embracing her new identity as a physician certified in obesity medicine. Her story of full-circle transformation was met with resounding applause and reflected the institute’s emphasis on sustainable change and lifelong commitment.
These powerful stories were supported and celebrated by the DHR Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute’s multidisciplinary care team. Patients and staff alike recognized the contributions of several physicians, including Dr. Manish Singh, Dr. Robert Alleyn, Dr. R. Armour Forse, and Dr. Guadalupe Aranguena-Sharpe, among others. The event repeatedly emphasized that success is not achieved in isolation but through the dedication of a team that provides surgical expertise, psychological support, nutritional counseling, and long-term guidance.
Throughout the evening, open mic opportunities allowed additional patients from the audience to step forward and share their stories. Many had lived with obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and joint pain for years before finally seeking surgical intervention. Their testimonials were often emotional, filled with gratitude, and served as further inspiration for those considering the procedure.
Mario Garcia, one of the final speakers of the night, recounted losing 400 pounds after undergoing surgery performed by Dr. Alleyn. His story—rooted in discipline, faith, and resilience—captivated the room. With a former shirt in hand that once fit his 550-pound frame, Mario offered tangible proof of the life-altering power of bariatric surgery and personal determination.
The event showcased unbelievable individual transformations. Family members, physicians, care coordinators, and support staff were invited onstage to take photos and stand alongside patients as symbols of the unity that sustains long-term health. Small gifts, such as succulents and floral arrangements, were given to attendees as symbols of growth and resilience.
As the event drew to a close, Dr. Singh offered words of reflection and thanks, honoring the patients and team members who have made DHR Health a leader in bariatric care. He reminded the audience that the institute’s mission extends far beyond surgery—it is a lifelong partnership in health.
With music, laughter, cheers, and heartfelt tears, the evening was more than a reunion; it was a vivid declaration of victory over adversity. For the patients who walked the runway and those watching from the audience, the event served as a reminder: transformation is possible, and at DHR Health, no one walks that path alone.
