On May 2011, DHR Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute opened its doors to Rio Grande Valley residents, showcasing the effort to combat diabetes amongst the Hispanic population.  

The Rio Grande Valley diabetes prevalence among the Hispanic population is 28%, which is higher than the national level of 18%.

Observant of the growing world epidemic of diabetes, DHR Health looked for ways to help residents control their diabetes.  Directed by Dr. Marcel Twahirwa, the institute opened its doors on 5/2/2011, with one physician and a nurse practitioner providing superb care to patients in the area.

Integrated into the DHR Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute, it is now a one-of-a-kind institution leading the battle to conquer diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley.  Equipped with cutting-edge research and innovative approaches to clinical care and education, the institute currently has one of the largest multispecialty team of physicians diagnosing and treating a full spectrum of endocrine disorders among all age groups.   

Today, the institute is home to four adult endocrinologist’s, two pediatric endocrinologist, one Endocrine Surgeon, two Nurse Practitioners, one Pharm D, one Registered Dietician and continues to grow to meet the needs of the community by offering expert care with advanced testing technology and innovative treatment options. Over the years, the institute has expanded locations across the RGV that include Edinburg, Mission, Weslaco, Brownsville and Rio Grande City.

Aesculap Implant Systems Settles for $38.5M, Enters Non-Prosecution Deal

Medical device company Aesculap Implant Systems LLC (Aesculap), based in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, has agreed to pay $38.5 million to resolve allegations under the False Claims Act that the company sold knee replacement devices that it knew would fail prematurely at a higher than acceptable rate, resulting in false claims to Medicare and Medicaid.
