Mega Doctor News recently attended a demonstration of the cutting-edge Da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system at DHR Health Brownsville, showcasing the hospital’s dedication to providing top-tier medical care to the community. The event featured insights from Dr. Karen Brooks, a respected general surgeon with over 30 years of experience, Aida Coronado, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of DHR Health, and Dr. Charles Shwertner, an orthopedic surgeon with 23 years in the field. Introducing this advanced technology emphasizes DHR Health’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the Rio Grande Valley.

Dr. Brooks is a seasoned general surgeon who recently joined DHR Health Brownsville, bringing over three decades of experience to the team. Originally from Jamaica, Dr. Brooks completed her medical training in the United States and has served the Brownsville community for 22 years. Now, as the Director of General Surgical Services and Director of Quality in Brownsville, she continues her commitment to providing exceptional care, particularly in minimally invasive surgeries like laparoscopic procedures.

Her transition from private practice to DHR Health has allowed her to stay at the forefront of surgical advancements, including robotic-assisted surgery. Dr. Brooks expressed her excitement about the Da Vinci 5 robotic system, a significant advancement in surgical technology. “This new technology provides a level of precision and safety that simply wasn’t available before. The “force feedback” feature is a game-changer—it allows us to perform surgeries with new confidence.”

Although relatively new to robotic surgery, Dr. Brooks has quickly embraced the Da Vinci 5 system. She has already begun using the technology for gallbladder surgeries and is preparing to expand to include hernia repairs. “I’ve been performing surgeries for over 30 years, and integrating such advanced technology into my practice is both challenging and rewarding,” she stated. This transition marks a significant shift in surgical practices, with Dr. Brooks leading the way in adopting this advanced technology to improve patient outcomes.

Thanks to Dr. Brooks’s extensive background in laparoscopic surgery, training with the Da Vinci 5 system is streamlined. The system’s advanced instrumentation and superior camera technology enhance control and precision, allowing surgeons to maintain greater autonomy during procedures. “The Da Vinci 5 system gives surgeons like me more control than ever before, making procedures smoother and more efficient,” she noted.

It’s truly a privilege,” Dr. Brooks commented.

With her unique blend of clinical and executive experience, Aida Coronado Garcia, FNP, has spearheaded the acquisition of the Da Vinci 5 system for DHR Health Brownsville. Her background as a nurse practitioner and her current role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer gives her a deep understanding of patient care and healthcare management. “Bringing the Da Vinci 5 to Brownsville was a critical move to ensure our community has access to the best surgical care without needing to travel to larger cities,” Coronado Garcia stated.
