Edinburg, Texas – DHR Health Institute for Research and Development in partnership with Region One Education Service Center GEAR UP College Ready, Career Set! and GEAR UP College Now – Career Connected! organized a daylong conference to address the evolving workforce challenges in healthcare in the nation and in South Texas. 

Over 120 educators composed of classroom teachers, counselors, campus and district administrators, directors of career technical education, and GEAR UP facilitators from 29 independent school districts who attended the conference entitled “Career Pathways in Healthcare” heard directly from experts on how to better guide students interested in careers in health science while recognizing the importance of the burgeoning need for healthcare workers in our region, the state, and the nation. 

“The primary objective of this conference was to foster a better understanding of the public health crisis and the growing need for healthcare workforce in the region,” said Sohail Rao, MD, MA, DPhil, President and CEO, DHR Health Institute for Research & Development. “We also wanted to share information about various career pathways in healthcare and to provide the most updated resources for the counselors to share with the students.”

“Region One GEAR UP recognizes the need for health care professionals in our area and is grateful that through our partnership with DHR Health Institute for Research & Development we have been able to shed some light on the various opportunities that exist for students. By sharing this information with our educators, we are ensuring that our students are better prepared to make career decisions for their future,” said Ricardo L. Leaders in the field of research, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory sciences, medical information technology and allied health sciences from DHR Health and other academic institutions shared their personal experiences and provided pathways that the middle and high schools students can take to help mitigate the evolving healthcare workforce challenges in the Valley. The attendees were also provided with an interactive digital handbook that had specific entrance and graduation criteria for career pathways in healthcare allowing the counselors to share relevant information with students in a timely manner.
