For the last 40 years, South Texas Health System (STHS) McAllen has stood tall in the South Texas skyline, serving as a beacon of healing and hope for the residents of McAllen and the greater Rio Grande Valley.

After spending more than 50 years in downtown McAllen as McAllen Municipal Hospital, McAllen General Hospital and McAllen Methodist Hospital, STHS McAllen moved to its current location off Expressway 83 in December 1985to bring advanced medical care to patients in the surrounding communities and their families.

Formerly known as McAllen Medical Center, the 441-bed facility was the first in McAllen and neighboring cities to offer services like open-heart surgery, one-day cardiac catheterization and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Four decades later, STHS McAllen has evolved and expanded its services to meet the growing healthcare needs of the four-county region. Home to a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and robust surgical services department that now includes robotic surgery capabilities, the facility has provided quality, compassionate care to hundreds of thousands of patients.

“Throughout the last 40 years, STHS McAllen has strived to expand its services and enhance patient care by investing in advanced medical technology and building a strong, collaborative team of healthcare professionals,” says Emma Montes-Ewing, Chief Executive Officer, STHS McAllen. “With the unwavering dedication of its staff and leaders, the facility has evolved into a comprehensive medical center that offers a wide range of specialties including emergency medicine, intensive care, neurology, radiology and a wide array of surgical specialties.”

To commemorate 40 years of caring for generations at its current location, STHS McAllen will host a special community celebration on Thursday, December 11, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the main parking lot of the facility.

The milestone event will look back on the 40 years of exceptional care at STHS McAllen, including some of the all-star staff members who have been working at the current location since Day One.

“The commitment to healthcare excellence of STHS McAllen’s 1,000-plus employees, including our longtime staff members across various departments, has been the backbone of STHS McAllen’s success,” says Montes-Ewing. “Together, the facility will continue to be a cornerstone of healing and health for generations to come.”
