Brownsville and Rio Grande City, Texas – DHR Health is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Juan M. Ortiz, a board-certified pulmonologist and critical care specialist. Ortiz will be serving the communities of Cameron and Starr counties, furthering DHR Health’s mission of elevating the standard of care for all residents of the Rio Grande Valley.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ortiz to the DHR Health family. His expertise will enhance our ability to provide the personalized care we dedicate to each of our patients’ unique needs,” said Marissa Castaneda, DHR Health senior executive vice president. 

With over 35 years of experience as a physician, Ortiz began his career in New York before relocating to the Rio Grande Valley. He earned his medical degree from Universidad El Bosque in Colombia, and worked for several years as a medical officer with cruise ship companies gaining extensive experience in emergency care. He started his residency in Internal Medicine in New York City at Beth Israel Medical Center, followed by dedicated fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, he pursued a third fellowship in Sleep Medicine at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital.

Shortly after finishing his fellowship training, he came to the RGV where he has provided care both in pulmonary and sleep medicine as well as critical care since 2003. He has treated patients across multiple hospitals in the area as well as at outpatient clinics.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Ortiz enjoys sailing, tennis, and listening to classical music in his spare time. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Chest Physicians and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, with past memberships in the American Thoracic Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Society of Neuro-Intensive Care. His interests include the diagnosis and management of COPD and bronchiectasis, asthma, and interstitial lung diseases and lung malignancies. Deeply committed to providing exceptional patient care, he prioritizes human health by promoting smoking cessation, education on appropriate diet, adequate sleep and physical activity. He strongly believes that preventing a disease is easier and more effective than treating a disease.

“I am extremely excited to continue working in these communities. Together, with the DHR Health footprint, we will provide needed excellent and dedicated care in the fields of pulmonary, sleep and critical care medicine,” said Ortiz.

He is now accepting new patients at his offices in Brownsville and Rio Grande City. At the DHR Health Brownsville Multispecialty Clinic located at 4770 N. Expressway, Suite 301, Ortiz will see pulmonary and critical care patients. To schedule an appointment, please call (956) 362-3980.
