Cervical cancer is a significant health concern for women, despite preventive measures and early detection. “Anybody who has a cervix can develop cervical cancer,” said Dr. Angelique Ridore, who says almost all cervical cancers are caused by a long-lasting infection called human papilloma virus, or HPV.
Once thought to only be sexually transmitted, HPV is extremely common and can be passed from one person to another through close skin-to-skin contact. Rates have plummeted by more than half over the past 50 years among women in their early 20s because they were the first generation to benefit from an HPV vaccine.
