Anita Monroy, 21, is committed to a future in nursing. Currently enrolled in the Vocational Nursing program at South Texas College, and it is her passion for the field that has earned her the recognition of Student of the Week.

Her passion began in high school when she completed a medical assistant program and earned her medical assistant license.

“I decided to pursue nursing because I love everything nurses and doctors do,” Monroy said. “It’s a career where I can help people that need it.”

Monroy was inspired to join the Vocational Nursing program at STC after hearing about it from a family friend who had completed the program.

She began her studies this semester and is focused on graduating in two years, to earn an associate degree in registered nursing. Next semester, she plans to continue taking extra classes to build her knowledge and skills.

She said she has found a support network among her classmates, who have become close friends. Monroy’s primary motivation, however, is her young daughter.

“I think, ‘This is for us and for a better future,’” she said. “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure she has what she needs.”

Monroy’s time at STC has made her more confident in seeking help and has strengthened her academic journey.

“STC has shown me that there are great professors and directors who are willing to help,” she said. “It’s given me the confidence I need to keep going.”

Outside of the classroom, Monroy is active in STC’s intramural sports community. She’s participated in volleyball, flag football and softball, and is currently playing soccer.

“Being involved in sports has helped me stay balanced and meet new people,” she said.

Monroy appreciates the support STC offers to students.

“I chose STC because they find ways to help in any way they can,” she said. “Other schools don’t always go out of their way, but STC does.”

With three siblings, Monroy has a strong family foundation. Her long-term goal is to establish a fulfilling career in nursing and keep growing in the field.

“I’ll always keep working toward something more, but right now, I love this, and I look forward to my future.”
