It’s no secret that aging changes the body and affects how it functions. As we get older, the body undergoes several physical changes that impact all organs and body systems, causing a gradual decline in function.

The bladder and urinary system are among those systems that weaken with age. The bladder becomes less elastic, and the muscles weaken, which can lead to health issues.

Urinary incontinence is an underdiagnosed and underreported problem that increases with age, affecting 38-55% of women older than 60 yearsand 50-84% of the elderly in long-term care facilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Other bladder-related health issues include kidney stones and urinary tract infections, as well as enlarged prostate in men.

Bladder issues can cause embarrassment and make sufferers feel self-conscious, leading some to avoid their normal activities, which can affect one’s quality of life.

Bladder problems in seniors can be treated with a combination of lifestyle modifications, medications and sometimes surgery.

To help educate the senior community on the diverse types of bladder problems in seniors and how they can be managed or treated, South Texas Health System and Prominence Health are dedicating their latest Senior Living Seminar to the topic.

Entitled “Living with Bladder Problems,” the seminar will spotlight the causes, effects and potential treatments for bladder problems in the elderly.

During the seminar, taking place on Friday, November 1, participants will get to learn about the risk factors that can lead to bladder problems, as well as the various ways to manage them.

Taking place in the Texas Room at South Texas Health System Edinburg beginning at 10 a.m., the monthly seminar will feature medical professionals and patient testimonials, a healthy cooking demonstration and an exercise demonstration for seniors.

The seminar will also include a community health fair featuring no cost health screenings including blood pressure and glucometer checks.
