Dr. Jaime Ruiz Pérez, a board-certified family medicine physician, founded Revive Skin Group Med SPA & Weight Loss Clinic in Edinburg, Texas. Since 2009, Dr. Ruiz has evolved his practice from family medicine to include specialized medical aesthetics and weight loss services.
Dr. Ruiz identified a gap in the market for physician-directed medical spas. Many local spas lacked comprehensive medical oversight, leading him to establish Revive Skin Group Med SPA & Weight Loss Clinic. This clinic provides clients with direct access to a doctor, ensuring better clinical decisions for cosmetic enhancements. “I wanted to offer that extra service to the clients. They can see the doctor and not see anybody else at a mid-level or an esthetician to make better clinical decisions about what they need for their cosmetic enhancements,” Dr. Ruiz explains.

So, it improves your skin’s texture, thickness, and quality,” Dr. Ruiz explains.

High obesity rates lead to numerous health complications, including diabetes, renal failure, and dialysis. “We see a lot of complications from obesity. Suppose we can stop this epidemic of obesity and make people able to modify their diet and their lifestyles. In that case, we should see some improvement in the population’s overall health,” Dr. Ruiz emphasizes.

Dr. Ruiz notes the exciting advancements in weight loss research and tools available today. Medications like Ozempic (semaglutide) have proven effective with minimal side effects. “A decade ago, we would dream about having a medication like this that would treat obesity,” he notes. These medications require only a once-a-week injection and are highly effective.
Holistic Approach to Diet and Health
Dr. Ruiz stresses that medication alone is not the solution. He advises that diet quality is crucial, as processed foods and toxins can lead to inflammation and health issues. “The more toxins or processed foods you eat and put into your body, the harder it is for your liver, as it can only handle X amount of toxins,” he explains.
Eligibility for Treatment
Revive Skin Group Med SPA & Weight Loss Clinic serves adult patients who are obese or overweight. “We only treat people who are obese or overweight. So, you have to meet those criteria,” Dr. Ruiz clarifies. While these medications were initially approved for diabetes treatment, they have proven highly effective for weight loss. “If you are overweight, if you’re obese, this is a medication that you might want to try. You don’t need to have diabetes to use this medication,” he adds.

Military Service and Professional Growth
Following his public health studies, Dr. Ruiz completed his residency in family practice at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. “I spent three years there and focused more on inpatient, the in-hospital, than anything else,” he recalls. After graduating, he joined the Air Force, serving for two and a half years and retiring as a major. At Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, Dr. Ruiz served as the medical director for the medical group, handling public health issues, running the immunization and allergy clinics, and preparing troops for deployment during the Afghanistan war. “As part of my training in the Air Force, they sent me to San Antonio to learn allergy medicine, and I ran that clinic and assisted in all the deployment committees there,” he adds.
Establishing a Practice in the Rio Grande Valley
In 2011, Dr. Ruiz moved to the Rio Grande Valley, drawn by its culture and proximity to his family in Monterrey. “I moved here because of the culture. Part of my family is from Monterrey, so it was convenient for me to relocate here to be closer to home,” he shares.
Emphasis on Physician Supervision
At Revive Skin Group Med SPA & Weight Loss Clinic, Dr. Ruiz emphasizes the importance of physician supervision in weight loss programs. “The key point here is that the program for weight loss is physician supervised; that sets us apart from the rest of the practices here,” he notes. Additional Ventures and Personal Hobbies
Dr. Ruiz also owns Valley Hospice Group, providing concierge-style hospitalist services to local practices in McAllen. “We cater to local practices in McAllen when the doctor can’t go to the hospital. So, we become an extension of the clinic, and we see their patients there,” he explains. This approach ensures seamless communication with primary care physicians, enhancing patient care and follow-ups.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Ruiz finds the decision to become his boss the most rewarding. “When I decided to leave the payroll and take that leap of faith and realized that it’s doable, that a physician can become his or her boss and build a practice, that was rewarding,” he says proudly.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Ruiz enjoys playing musical instruments and painting. He is also involved in other business ventures with his wife, who is an architect. They help each other in their respective fields. “I like music, so I play guitar, bass, and a little bit of drums, and I still need to learn the saxophone. And I like art, so I paint,” he mentions.
