U.S. News recently surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults on how they go about choosing a doctor, what qualities they want in a primary care physician, why they skip checkup visits, and more. Here’s a preview:

  • More than one quarter (27%) of U.S. adults had their last annual physical in 2022 or earlier.
  • More than one quarter (29%) who had a recent annual physical (in 2023 or 2024) said they visit their primary care provider more often since the start of the COVID pandemic.
  • One in five (20%) want to know their primary care provider’s stance on ethnic disparities in health care.
  • Two in three (66%) are more likely to visit a primary care provider if masks are required.
  • Three in four (75%) are more likely to visit a primary care provider where COVID vaccines are offered.
  • Nearly one quarter (23%) look for a primary care provider with many positive patient reviews.
