Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo, Mayor Pete Saenz, and Councilmember for District 4, Alberto Torres, Jr., have proclaimed the month of September 2021 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. A proclamation ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 1st at City Hall Council Chambers. In partnership with Smiles From Heaven, the City will express the importance of raising childhood cancer awareness. Smiles from Heaven was founded in 2019 with the mission to help children and families affected by cancer.

“During this month, the City of Laredo and other local organizations will conduct awareness campaigns to educate the community about the hardship cancer brings, the need for ongoing research to find a cure, and to honor all medical professionals who are striving to save lives every day,” stated Councilmember for District 4, Alberto Torres, Jr. “Together, let’s show support for our brave children.”

During this month, the community is encouraged to wear gold clothing or a ribbon to honor campaigns recognizing children and families struggling with childhood cancer. Other ways the community can get involved include joining an advocacy program, whose mission is to raise awareness and funds, and donating to an organization focused on conducting research to find a cure.
