Wellness Program Coordinator Diana Huallpa presented a summary of the Hidalgo County Teladoc service.

Teladoc is a call service that provides a national network of U.S. board-certified doctors available 24/7/365 to resolve medical issues, inquiries or concerns employees may have about their health. The phone service allows employees to speak to a doctor even when most medical offices are closed, thus saving a trip to the emergency room, said Huallpa.

“Our numbers have been increasing,” said Huallpa. “We’ve seen a big improvement in utilization of this service since the start of the year.”

According to the report, more employees are using the service each month.  Of the users, 15% would not have received treatment, 5% would have gone to an Emergency Room, and 17% to an Urgent Care facility if Teladoc wasn’t available.

Teladoc is part of a countywide effort to encourage healthy habits among employees.

“We want to continue to encourage the wellness programs and opportunities for all of our county employees,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu. “Monday through Friday beginning at 5 a.m., we offer our employees a place to work out. We also have our Community Wellness Expos the first Saturday of the month, where the community learns about what we are doing to keep our employees healthy.”
