Cameron County – Valley Baptist Health System, the City of Harlingen and Harlingen Consolidated School District have teamed up with It’s Time Texas to help encourage the community to participate in the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge, an 8-week healthy living competition across the state to help promote healthy eating and exercise.

It’s Time Texas is a statewide nonprofit that champions the movement for a healthier Texas by making healthy lifestyles more accessible to all Texans.  The seventh-annual It’s Time Texas Community Challenge is a free statewide competition that ends March 3rd and rewards participants and the community for making healthy choices every day.

“We are honored to partner with the Valley Baptist Medical System this year to make the Community Challenge available to event more Texans in the Rio Grande Valley region,” said Dr. Baker Harrell, CEO and Founder of It’s Time Texas. “It is so inspiring to see the participation of so many individuals, school districts, businesses, and a record number of mayors within the region.”

According to the PublicHealth, larger portion sizes and a decrease in activity are major contributors to the obesity epidemic.  More than two-thirds of all Texas adults are overweight/obese and more than 11% of Texas adults have diabetes.

“We are proud to be a part or such a wonderful cause,” said Manny Vela, Chief Executive Officer for Valley Baptist Health System.  “Helping our community live healthier lives is a commitment we are passionate about.”

It’s Time Texas champions the movement to establish a culture of health in the Lone Star State. The nonprofit organization’s programs and partnerships empower all Texans to lead healthier lives, build healthier communities, and contribute to a healthier state.  The Community Challenge is a free initiative and closes March 3, 2019. The winning community in each size category will receive funds to put towards future health efforts.

“By all of us working together we will make this a healthier, happier community,” said Vela.
