To raise public awareness about the importance of male health and to encourage men to live longer and healthier lives through early detection and treatment of diseases, Commissioners Court approved a resolution honoring National Men’s Health Month.

Each year June is observed as National Men’s Health month and the week leading up to Father’s Day is known as Men’s Health Awareness week.

“Our numbers here in the Valley are extremely high for prostate cancer,” said Health and Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eduardo Olivarez.

Wearing a blue tie in support to raise awareness in men’s health is encouraged. Olivarez also encouraged citizens to get annual check-ups.

“Making annual visits to the doctor and self-educating on the importance of health issues men face is detrimental to men’s lives and their families,” Olivarez said.

Every year more than 100,000 men in the United States and nearly 45,000 in Texas alone lose their lives to cancer. The most common kinds of cancer among men being prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer, read the resolution.

Hidalgo County Health and Human Services is committed to increasing men’s health awareness by encouraging everyone to participate in “Blue Tie Day” each Tuesday during the month of June.
