As people age, their immune systems become less effective, making it more difficult to fight off infections and disease. As a result, they face a greater risk of serious complications from illnesses such as influenza, pneumonia, shingles and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
“As we grow older, our immune systems become less effective at recognizing and fighting infection, which can increase the risk of serious illness and hospitalization,” said Chris Casso, MD, FAAFP, DABOM, a board-certified family medicine physician and Diplomate of Obesity Medicine with South Texas Health System Clinics. “Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to help older adults safeguard their well-being, preserve their independence and continue leading active lives.”
Despite the proven benefits of vaccination, many seniors remain vulnerable to preventable illnesses. Concerns about side effects, uncertainty about which immunizations are recommended and the misconception that vaccines are primarily for children can discourage individuals from seeking this important preventive care.
For those living with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disorders, protection against infectious diseases is especially important. These underlying health concerns can increase the likelihood of severe illness, complications and hospitalization.
“Staying current on recommended vaccines can help lower the risk of serious complications and provide an added layer of protection against illnesses that can significantly affect overall quality of life,” said Dr. Casso.
To help older adults in the Rio Grande Valley better understand the role vaccinations play in healthy aging, STHS and Prominence Health are dedicating the next installment of their Senior Living Seminar Series to aging and vaccines. The monthly program offers practical health information and resources designed to help participants make informed decisions and continue living well as they age.
The free seminar will explore how the immune system changes over time, recommended vaccines for older adults and common misconceptions that may prevent some individuals from getting vaccinated.
Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how to stay current on recommended immunizations.
In addition to the educational presentation, attendees will participate in exercise and cooking demonstrations highlighting how physical activity, nutrition and everyday lifestyle choices can support long-term wellness.
“Education is a powerful tool when it comes to healthy aging,” said Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, STHS. “Our goal is to give seniors the knowledge and confidence they need to take an active role in their well-being. Through programs like the Senior Living Seminar Series, we’re helping people learn practical strategies to stay healthy, maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life.”
The “Aging & Vaccines” seminar will take place in the Texas Room at STHS Edinburg, located at 1102 W. Trenton Road in Edinburg, on Friday, November 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
