CLEVELAND CLINIC – September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

Everyone forgets things from time to time, but when could it be a sign of something more serious?

“It becomes concerning when you’re experiencing forgetfulness more often, such as frequently missing appointments or forgetting the names of familiar people. Other warning signs include getting lost in a familiar place or having family members notice that you’re repeating yourself often,” said Sandra Darling, DO, a preventive medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic.

According to Dr. Darling, mild forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging, but memory lapses that affect daily life shouldn’t be ignored.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, with symptoms most often appearing after age 65.

But Dr. Darling said Alzheimer’s is not the only possible cause of memory issues.

Memory problems can also be related to depression, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies, poor sleep and more.

That’s why she recommends talking with a doctor if you’re experiencing forgetfulness more often.

“You want to see your primary care doctor right away to be evaluated to determine the underlying cause of any memory problems and get treatment,” Dr. Darling said.

Dr. Darling stress edearly treatment can help slow or even potentially reverse memory problems depending on the cause.
