MERCEDES, Texas  Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement (VIDA) has been awarded a $300,000, two-year grant from Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc. to launch an innovative initiative that integrates evidence-based mental health support into workforce development, strengthening student persistence and expanding access to care for underserved communities across the Rio Grande Valley.

The funding will support a collaboration with researchers from Harvard Medical School to implement EMPOWER, an evidence-based model that equips frontline staff to deliver psychosocial interventions for depression through Behavioral Activation. Supported by digital tools, the model is designed to expand access to mental health support in underserved communities without requiring organizations to operate existing mental health programs or employ licensed behavioral health providers.

At VIDA, career counselors work closely with participants throughout their educational journey, helping them navigate personal, financial, and academic challenges while providing the support needed to persist and succeed. Through this initiative, these trusted staff members will receive specialized training and tools to recognize mental health needs and deliver evidence-based support that helps participants stay engaged in their educational and career goals.

“This partnership reinforces what we have always believed, that student success requires supporting the whole person,” said Felida Villarreal, President and CEO of VIDA. “Mental health challenges can create significant barriers to completing education and entering the workforce. By integrating evidence-based behavioral health practices into our existing support model, we can better equip our participants to overcome those barriers and achieve lasting economic mobility.”

For more than 30 years, VIDA has empowered motivated, low-income residents of the Rio Grande Valley through comprehensive workforce development services, including career counseling, tuition assistance, financial support, and employer partnerships. The addition of EMPOWER builds upon VIDA’s nationally recognized wraparound service model by incorporating research-backed mental health interventions that strengthen resilience, improve educational persistence, and promote overall well-being.

The collaboration also contributes to a growing body of research exploring how evidence-based behavioral health interventions can improve educational attainment and workforce outcomes. By partnering with Harvard Medical School researchers, VIDA is helping demonstrate how workforce organizations can expand access to mental health support in communities where behavioral health resources are often limited.

“We are deeply grateful to Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas for investing in this innovative initiative,” Villarreal said. “Their support allows us to strengthen the services we provide today while helping shape new approaches that can improve lives far beyond the Rio Grande Valley.”
