EDINBURG, Texas – Behind every military uniform is a story of courage, sacrifice and dedication. But for many veterans, the effects of military life can linger long after they return home.

Years of rigorous training, deployments, combat exposure and extended time away from loved ones can take a lasting toll on an individual’s physical and emotional well-being.

Many veterans face health concerns ranging from chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries and mobility limitations to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and substance use disorders.

The adjustment to civilian life can bring its own set of complexities, further impacting one’s overall health and quality of life.

Approximately 31% of veterans receiving care through the Veterans Health Administration have a diagnosed mental health condition, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, underscoring the need for accessible care, education and community support.

As Veterans Day approaches, South Texas Health System (STHS) is preparing to honor the Rio Grande Valley’s military heroes while raising awareness of the unique physical and mental health concerns many veterans experience after leaving the armed forces.

“The health needs of veterans don’t disappear when their military careers end, which is why continued support from healthcare providers, community organizations and fellow veterans is so important,” said Lance Ames, Chief Executive Officer, STHS Edinburg and STHS Children’s. “Creating opportunities for veterans and their families to connect while increasing awareness of available resources can have a meaningful impact on their overall well-being. We want every veteran to know they are valued, appreciated and never alone.”

To help foster that sense of community, STHS will host its annual A Salute to Valley Veterans Concert & Community Fair, bringing together veterans, their families and local residents for an evening of live music, free food and community resources.

The event will also recognize STHS employees who have proudly served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

In addition to honoring local veterans, the celebration aims to help reduce the stigma that can prevent individuals from seeking assistance while connecting attendees with health, wellness and community services.

“The transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, and no veteran should have to face it alone,” said Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, STHS. “By bringing veterans, families, healthcare providers and community organizations together, this event helps strengthen connections and raise awareness of programs and services designed to support veteran health and well-being. Our hope is that every veteran leaves knowing help, hope and support are available.”

Through the community fair, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about local programs and services designed to support veterans’ physical, emotional and behavioral health needs.

“Whether they’re coping with the physical effects of military service, emotional trauma or the challenges of adjusting to civilian life, early intervention and access to care can make a meaningful difference,” said Brenda Ivory, Chief Executive Officer, STHS Behavioral and STHS Heart. “Many of these struggles are not immediately visible, which is why awareness and outreach are so important. Through this event, we want veterans and their families to know that they are not alone and that resources are available when they need them.

The event is free and open to the public. Veterans attending the celebration are encouraged to wear their military uniforms or attire representing their branch of service.
