South Texas Health System Edinburg continues to lead the charge when it comes to putting patients first to deliver quality, compassionate care, all while investing in advanced technology like the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system and expanding services like the STHS Limb Salvage & Amputation Prevention Program to meet the comprehensive healthcare needs of residents of the ever-evolving Rio Grande Valley, according to U.S. News & World Report.

A recognized leader in hospital rankings, the magazine has named STHS Edinburg as a Best Regional Hospital in Texas for 2025-2026, one of only 504 hospitals nationwide and the only facility in South Texas to earn the distinction.

It’s the fourth consecutive year that STHS Edinburg has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of top hospitals for its high performance in providing complex care across multiple medical specialties.

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals across 15 adult specialties and 22 procedures and conditions; only 13% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospital designation.

“To be the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to earn this distinction for the last four years is a testament to the unwavering dedication and compassion of our stellar team of physician, nurses and staff who deliver quality, compassionate care daily to the patients who entrust us with their care,” says Lance Ames, Chief Executive Officer, STHS Edinburg & STHS Children’s. “This Best Regional Hospital designation reflects South Texas Health System’s commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of our local community and elevating the standard of healthcare in South Texas as we strive to provide the best care and service to the patients we serve at STHS Edinburg and our 11 sister facilities.”

U.S. News acknowledges that isn’t always possible for patients to travel long distances to receive ongoing care, which happens to be a common challenge among Valley residents. With its annual list, the magazine recognizes top performing hospitals in every region of the country, revealing that people in the region don’t have to travel out of the area for excellent medical treatment.

Coming in at #24 in the State of Texas, STHS Edinburg is the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to make the list, which is compiled annually to help patients and their doctors make more informed decisions about where to receive medical care for challenging health conditions and common elective procedures.

To be considered among this year’s Best Regional Hospital honorees, a facility commonly had to outperform in at least seven procedures and conditions that U.S. News evaluates, including risk-adjusted survival, patient experience, level of nursing care and how successfully each hospital gets patients back home. The magazine evaluated each hospital’s performance using several measures based on data provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists.

“For more than three decades, U.S. News has been an invaluable guide for patients,” said Managing Editor and Chief of Health Analysis Ben Harder at U.S. News. “With a ‘Best Hospital’ recognition, Americans, in consultation with their medical providers, can confidently choose a regional hospital known for providing superior care for their specific illness or condition.”

In making the list, STHS Edinburg was recognized for its high performance in 10 common procedures or conditions among adults. They include kidney failure, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke, pneumonia, heart failure, heart attack, heart arrythmia, pacemaker and blood cancer (leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma).

U.S. News & World Report’s evaluations of common procedures and conditions are based entirely on patient outcomes and volume data. The magazine’s evaluation of STHS Edinburg included data from the facility; its other acute care facilities: STHS McAllen and STHS Heart; and its behavioral health facility: STHS Behavioral.
