The magazine, a recognized leader in hospital rankings, has named STHS Edinburg as a Best Regional Hospital in Texas for 2024-2025. It’s the third consecutive year that the facility has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of top hospitals for its performance in providing complex care across multiple medical specialties.
U.S. News acknowledges that isn’t always possible for patients to travel long distances to receive ongoing care, which happens to be a common challenge many Valley residents face. With its annual list, the magazine recognizes top performing hospitals in every region of the country, demonstrating that people in the region don’t have to travel out of the area for excellent treatment.
Coming in at #23 in the State of Texas, South Texas Healthy System Edinburg is the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to make the list, which is compiled annually to help patients and their doctors make more informed decisions about where to receive medical care for challenging health conditions and common elective procedures.
STHS Edinburg, which doubled in size in the summer of 2022 with the addition of a $104 million five-story patient tower to meet the community’s ever-growing healthcare needs, is part of the elite 11% of the 4,500 hospitals evaluated across the United States that earned a numerical ranking.
“It’s an honor to be the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to be named a Best Regional Hospital by such a prestigious magazine for the third year in a row. It serves as testament to our dedication to quality, compassionate care to our patients at the highest level, while striving to achieve the best patient outcomes and a positive experience for those who entrust us with their care,” says Lance Ames, Chief Executive Officer, South Texas Health System Edinburg & STHS Children’s. “STHS Edinburg is not only committed to meet the needs of our local community; we’re also aiming to elevate the standard of healthcare across the state. This designation recognizes our staff’s dedication, skill and clinical excellence as we endeavor to provide the best care and service to the patients we serve.”
To be considered among this year’s Best Regional Hospitals, a facility commonly had to outperform in at least seven procedures and conditions that U.S. News evaluates, including risk-adjusted survival, patient experience, level of nursing care and how successfully each hospital gets patients back home. The magazine evaluated each hospital’s performance using several measures based on data provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists.
“For 35 years, U.S. News has been a leading resource for patients navigating their health care decisions,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A ‘Best Hospital’ recognition empowers patients to seek out medical care from the best of the best to treat their illness or condition.”
In making the list, STHS Edinburg was recognized for its high performance in seven common procedures or conditions. U.S. News & World Report’s evaluations of common procedures and conditions are based entirely on patient outcomes and volume data.
STHS Edinburg was recognized as “high performing” for heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, heart attack, kidney failure, pneumonia and stroke.
The magazine’s evaluation of STHS Edinburg included data from the facility; its three other acute care facilities: STHS McAllen, STHS Children’s and STHS Heart; and its behavioral health facility: STHS Behavioral.
