As the largest integrated network of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley, South Texas Health System (STHS) provides quality, compassionate care to nearly 240,000 patients each year across the system’s 12 facilities.

To help ensure that STHS adopts exacting standards for patient care quality, monitors and improves clinical outcomes, operates in compliance with federal and state regulations, and achieves accreditation standards and reimbursement requirements, STHS heavily relies on its esteemed Board of Governors.

The board consists of 17 members, including six community representatives, all residents of the Rio Grande Valley with diverse business and professional backgrounds charged with setting the healthcare system’s strategic direction, vision and mission to meet the region’s healthcare needs.

To meet this goal, the Board of Governors of South Texas Health System is charged with ensuring continuous quality improvement across our facilities. This is accomplished through monitoring and reviewing staff as well as the service and care they provide. Board members also monitor activities for the attainment and maintenance of accreditations by The Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies.

One of the newest community representatives appointed to the STHS Board of Governors is Nick Rhodes, President and CEO of Rhodes Enterprises, the largest and fastest growing mixed-use developer of master-planned communities in the Rio Grande Valley. Headquartered in McAllen, the real estate company is committed to enhancing the lives of its customers, staff and the landscape of the communities it serves.

Since joining the STHS Board of Governors, Rhodes has fully embraced the vision of South Texas Health System: to achieve the highest quality of compassionate care for patients and their families through innovation and advanced technology.

“Healthcare is a critical issue nationwide, and I’m excited to be involved at the local level and learn about the nuances and how we can all make a difference for the community,” says Rhodes, who was appointed to the board this fall. “South Texas Health System’s commitment to this community is demonstrated by the innovations they invest in that better serve the residents of the Rio Grande Valley.”

Understanding his role as a community representative, Rhodes looks forward to offering what he calls his “relative expertise” to help STHS meet the healthcare needs of the communities it serves.

“The scope of South Texas Health System is vast. With over 3,000 employees and millions of dollars invested in the community, I’m impressed and honored to be serving on a board whose mission is clear – deliver high quality care to the communities counting on us for their healthcare needs,” says Rhodes. “Being on the inside track of healthcare allows Rhodes Enterprises and myself to figure out where we can serve a need and be helpful in our community. I’m excited to be here and to continue to serve.”

Chairman J. Humberto Rodriguez, who has served on the STHS Board of Governors for 40 years, is looking forward to the fresh perspectives Rhodes will bring to the board.

“South Texas Health System is committed to continuous improvement to meet the healthcare needs of the ever-growing communities we serve,” says Rodriguez, the President & CEO of Exquisita Tortillas, Inc. “On behalf of the STHS Board of Governors, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to Nick. We look forward to the new perspectives and expertise that Nick will bring to the board, which will help ensure that we continue to provide high quality, compassionate care to our patients and help improve the overall health and well-being of the people of the Rio Grande Valley.

South Texas Health System, a nationally recognized healthcare system, is comprised of four acute care facilities, seven freestanding emergency departments and a behavioral health hospital.
