Pharr, Texas – Rio Grande Valley College (RGVC) proudly celebrates a major milestone in the continued success of its Apprenticeship Nursing Program, the first program of its kind in the region. What began as an innovative approach to nursing education has grown into a proven model of excellence, with four successful cohorts completed and a fifth cohort preparing to begin.

To date, more than 50 students have been served through the program, achieving an exceptional 95.12% first-attempt NCLEXRN pass rate. Graduates of the program have transitioned directly into the healthcare workforce as employees of DHR Health, strengthening the local healthcare system and reinforcing the program’s mission of workforce development and community impact.

This success is the result of a strong and intentional partnership between RGV College and DHR Health, with critical support provided by Texas Workforce Development. Together, these partners have created a pathway that combines rigorous education, hands-on clinical experience, and direct employment opportunities—setting a new standard for nursing education in the region.

Rows of white lab coats hang in anticipation—each one representing a future nurse, a life of service, and a commitment to excellence at Rio Grande Valley College. As the next cohort prepares to begin, the program stands ready to fulfill its promise of opportunity and impact. In the words of Dr. Joel Mario Ramos, this journey is about “combining rigorous academics with hands-on clinical practice,” empowering students to step forward and strengthen healthcare across the Rio Grande Valley. Courtesy image

Beyond academic achievement, the Apprenticeship Nursing Program has played a key role in shaping the identity and future of RGV College. Its success reflects the institution’s commitment to innovation, accessibility, and alignment with community and industry needs.

As RGVC continues to expand, now operating with two campuses and planning for a third, the program stands as a model for how education, healthcare, and workforce partners can come together to build sustainable career pathways and strengthen the region’s future.
