Known to diminish our quality of life, chronic pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a majority of the elderly suffer from chronic pain that significantly alters their daily activities and imposes an enormous burden on their overall health and well-being.
The prevalence of chronic pain increases with age, affecting 28% of adults 65 to 84 years of age, according to the American Journal of Nursing.
Chronic pain in seniors can be caused by a health condition like arthritis. But it may also follow acute pain from an injury, surgery, or other health issues that have been treated.
Treating chronic pain in the elderly population poses many challenges and risks. That’s why it is important to work with a physician to properly manage pain.
Treatment plans for severe chronic pain should integrate self-management and lower risk methods while safely exploring higher-risk therapies until an optimal treatment regimen is established. It’s crucial to be aware of all treatment options and recognize the effects of chronic pain.
To help educate the senior community in the Rio Grande Valley on the risks of chronic pain and how it can be treated, South Texas Health System and Prominence Health are teaming up to host the latest installment of their popular Senior Living Seminar Series.
