Mega Doctor News recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Angela Lomas, a highly skilled Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgeon at DHR Health Brownsville. Dr. Lomas was present at unveiling the da Vinci 5 surgical system, a groundbreaking technology that marks a new era of precision in surgical care. DHR Health Brownsville is the first hospital in South Texas to house this advanced system, and Dr. Lomas was among the first to test the equipment, eagerly integrating it into her practice.

Dr. Angela Lomas, originally from Houston, Texas, brings six years of practice experience to her new role in Brownsville, where she has recently relocated. Her journey into medicine began early, inspired by her family’s encouragement to pursue higher education. “I knew I wanted to be a doctor as early as the eighth grade,” Dr. Lomas recalls. “But it wasn’t until medical school that I discovered my passion for surgery, particularly bariatric surgery.”

Dr. Lomas earned her biology degree from the University of North Texas and attended medical school at Texas A&M. She completed her residency in Edinburg, Texas, where she specialized in bariatric surgery and developed a deep love for the field. “What drew me to bariatric surgery was the opportunity to build long-term relationships with my patients,” she explains. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see these surgeries’ positive impact on their lives, not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well.”

During her residency, Dr. Lomas received extensive training in robotic surgery, focusing on the da Vinci surgical system. “I spent four of my five residency years enhancing my skills in robotic-assisted procedures,” Dr. Lomas says. “The da Vinci system offers unparalleled precision, control, and efficiency, which translates to better outcomes for patients.”

At the recent unveiling of the da Vinci 5 system at DHR Health Brownsville, Dr. Lomas was not just an observer but actively involved in testing the new equipment. “It was an incredible experience to be one of the first to test the da Vinci 5 here in Brownsville,” she shares. “The technology exceeded my expectations in every way, and I am thrilled to incorporate it into my surgical practice.”

In her new role at DHR Health Brownsville, Dr. Lomas is excited to utilize the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 robotic system. “This is the latest advancement in minimally invasive surgery, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to use it,” she said. “The system is designed to be more comfortable for surgeons, with an ergonomically designed console that reduces fatigue during lengthy procedures. This is a significant advantage, especially when performing complex surgeries like bariatric procedures.”

Dr. Lomas’s connection to the Rio Grande Valley is deeply personal. “I fell in love with this region during my residency in Edinburg,” she says. “The community here is so welcoming and close-knit, which is quite different from Houston’s larger, more impersonal environment. It felt like home, and I knew I wanted to return to the Valley to practice medicine.”

Her decision to move to Brownsville was also driven by her desire to contribute to the local community’s health and well-being. “I’m excited about the opportunity to help patients in the Valley achieve their weight loss and overall health goals,” Dr. Lomas shares. “Using advanced technology like the da Vinci 5 robot allows us to offer the highest standard of care in Brownsville. Patients no longer have to travel to larger cities for top-tier surgical treatment.”

The da Vinci 5 surgical system is a highly advanced robotic technology designed to assist surgeons in performing surgeries with greater precision, control, and efficiency. “In simple terms, the da Vinci 5 allows us to perform minimally invasive surgeries with incredible accuracy,” Dr. Lomas explains. “This means smaller incisions, less blood loss, reduced recovery times, and overall better outcomes for our patients.”

Dr. Lomas is particularly enthusiastic about this technology’s role in her bariatric surgery practice. “Bariatric surgery is a life-changing procedure, and the precision offered by the da Vinci 5 enhances the safety and effectiveness of these surgeries,” she states. “I’m looking forward to utilizing this technology to help my patients achieve lasting health improvements.”

As Dr. Lomas settles into her new position at DHR Health Brownsville, she is eager to build long-term relationships with her patients and provide them with comprehensive care. “My approach to patient care is holistic,” Dr. Lomas says. “It’s not just about the surgery itself but about supporting my patients throughout their journey to better health.”

Dr. Lomas’s commitment to patient care and expertise in advanced surgical techniques make her a valuable addition to the Rio Grande Valley’s medical community. “I’m dedicated to helping my patients achieve their health and wellness goals,” she affirms. “With the da Vinci 5 robotic system, we’re equipped to offer the most advanced surgical care available, and I’m excited to be a part of this new chapter in healthcare at DHR Health Brownsville.”

In conclusion, Dr. Angela Lomas’s arrival in Brownsville marks a significant milestone for DHR Health and the community it serves. Her passion for surgery, dedication to patient care, and enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology ensure that her patients receive the highest standard of care. As she puts it, “This is just the beginning. I’m here to make a difference, and with the da Vinci 5, we’re poised to do just that.”
