Edinburg, Texas: DHR Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Ryan S. Shine has joined their Level 1 Trauma Center as a fellowship-trained, board-certified Critical Care Surgeon. He will be part of a dedicated team that provides 24 hours a day, 365 days a year trauma care to incoming patients. In addition to his trauma work, Dr. Shine will see patients for general surgical needs at the DHR Health Surgery Institute located 1100 E. Dove Ave Suite 300 in McAllen.

A native of California, Dr. Shine earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He then moved to the Rio Grande Valley where he accepted a rigorous five-year general surgery internship and residency with DHR Health through the UTRGV School of Medicine. During his training with DHR Health, he distinguished himself by participating in several hospital committees and leadership roles, including serving as the chief academic resident. He then furthered his expertise by completing a trauma & surgical critical care fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Shine has co-authored several published articles and has delivered presentations at both national and international conferences. His research focus is on innovative surgical techniques, trauma care resuscitation, and the integration of advanced imaging technologies in critical care settings.

“Dr. Shine was one of the finest residents to come through DHR Health’s first surgical training program. He had no previous ties to the Rio Grande Valley. After residency, he went and completed a surgical critical care fellowship at UT Southwest in Dallas. Now for his career, he has chosen to return to the RGV, and we are ecstatic about this decision. This is the result of a culmination of years of putting together training programs for both undergraduate and graduate medical education. Someone not from the valley coming back to the valley after training with us to continue their career and serve the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley in trauma care is remarkable. Dr. Shine is an excellent surgeon, has exceptional clinical decision-making abilities and is a great teacher. He will be an enormous asset for both DHR Health and the RGV community. We are proud to welcome him home,” said Dr. Jeffrey Skubic, DHR Health Level 1 Center Medical Director.

“Dr. Shine’s compassionate approach to patient care, and his commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements is a great benefit to the community,” said Marissa Castaneda, Executive Vice President of DHR Health.

Dr. Shine is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, American College of Surgeons’ South Texas Chapter, and the Panamerican Trauma Society.

“I am honored to join the prestigious group of surgeons already at DHR Health and to continue to innovate care in the top trauma center in the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding international region,” said Dr. Shine.

The DHR Health Level 1 Trauma Center, established in 2021, was the first hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to receive this prestigious designation. Achieving a Level I status is the highest level of recognition and verifies that in addition to responding to and providing round-the-clock care to trauma patients, the program must also have a residency training program in place to keep up with the latest advancements in health care with active research in the field of trauma care. DHR Health Level I Trauma Center is considered a comprehensive regional resource caring for 1.5 million of the region’s population.
