Edinburg, Texas – In 2020, more than 39,000 transplants brought renewed life to patients, their families, and communities.  As April is National Donate Life Month, DHR Health Transplant Institute encourages the community to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.

95% of Americans support donation, but only 60% are registered.  A single donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation, and help improve the lives of 75 others through tissue and eye donation. By registering your decision to be a donor in the National Donate Life Registry, you can help save lives and give hope to the 113,000 people in the United States currently awaiting a transplant.

South Texas is home to a large Hispanic and diabetic population, creating a greater need for organ donation in our area.  DHR Health Transplant Institute is the only facility in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) that currently offers comprehensive kidney transplant services. Without an active transplant program in our community, most individuals have had to travel outside of South Texas to receive all of their organ transplant medical care. Now, patients no longer have to leave the RGV, but can receive their pre-surgery assessment, surgical services, and follow-up visits close to home.

Providing life-saving organ transplants to men, women, and children wouldn’t be possible without the selfless decision of donors and donor families who say “yes” to donation.  One organ donor can save and enhance the lives of up to 8 people.

To bring awareness to organ donation, the community is invited to attend the “Garden of Life” celebration on Saturday, April 17, 2021.  Residents will have the opportunity to register as organ donors and get educated on the opportunity of giving the “Gift of Life” through organ donation or living donation.   The Rio Grande Valley is encouraged to attend the event and to sign up with Donate Life Texas as an organ, eye, and tissue donor at DonateLifeTexas.org, Texas Department of Public Safety, or Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

For more information about DHR Health Transplant Institute or how to register to become an organ donor, please call, DHR Health Transplant Institute, at (956) 362-LIFE (5433).
