RIO GRAND VALLEY, Texas – During the month of October, DHR Health would like to remind the community that it is home to only “Breast Center of Excellence,” accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). This is a designation DHR Health has had since 2015 and is the only Breast Center of Excellence found south of San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Laredo.

To help us understand this special designation, DHR Health General Surgeon Dr. Cera Kroenke breaks down what this accreditation means and why it is so critical for patients who face a breast cancer diagnosis.

What is a “Breast Center of Excellence”?

Dr. Kroenke:  The title of “Breast Center of Excellence” is awarded exclusively to facilities, such as DHR Health, who voluntarily commit to delivering comprehensive, multidisciplinary care.

To earn this accreditation, a hospital system or center, must pass a rigorous independent review process that evaluates coordination across five core areas: Breast Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Breast Radiology, and Oncology Nursing.

An accredited center, such as DHR Health, must also demonstrate an ongoing commitment to quality improvement projects and active participation in clinical research, all of which our hospital system is proudly a part of.

Is there value in having a “Breast Cancer of Excellence” in the Rio Grande Valley?

Dr. Kroenke: Yes, most definitely! A breast cancer diagnosis marks the beginning of a challenging journey for a patient. Securing treatment at a hospital that delivers the highest quality of care is of utmost importance. To ensure this standard, patients should look for a designated “Breast Center of Excellence” which they can find here at DHR Health.

Are mammograms important for women over 40?

Dr. Kroenke: Yes, they most certainly are! Early detection saves lives. That is why I encourage women to schedule their mammograms regularly. During the month of October, DHR Health is offering a mammogram screening special to make it easier for women in our community to be proactive about their breast health.

The American Cancer Society and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommend that women begin annual mammogram screenings at age 40. Screening frequency may vary based on personal or family history and other risk factors, so it is important to talk with a health care provider to determine the most appropriate screening plan.

A $99 mammogram screening special is available at multiple DHR Health imaging locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including McAllen, Edinburg, Weslaco, and Brownsville. For those who had their prior imaging performed elsewhere, DHR Health recommends bringing previous breast imaging studies, including mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI, along with the reports, to help radiologists compare and expedite the interpretation of the exam.

To schedule a mammogram screening, call the DHR Health Imaging Scheduling Center at (956) 362-7503 and ask to be scheduled at a location nearest to you. A doctor’s referral for a mammogram screening is required.
