EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health, one of the largest physician-owned hospitals in the United States and a proud healthcare provider for the Rio Grande Valley since 1997, is proud to welcome Dr. Carlo Sebastian Briones Chavez to its growing team of oncology specialists. With fellowship training in hematology and oncology, Briones is an expert in diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. He also specializes in benign hematology, anemias, thrombocytopenias, and other related conditions. Using state-of-the-art technology and a comprehensive team approach, he provides personalized care for each patient’s cancer journey.  

“Dr. Briones exemplifies the kind of compassionate, research-driven physician our institution values,” said Marissa Castañeda, senior executive vice president at DHR Health. “His commitment to community health and global outreach will make a significant impact on our patients.”

Briones is board certified in Internal Medicine and recently completed his fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Larkin Community Hospital in Florida, with core training at Palmetto General and Hialeah Hospitals. He is a graduate of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, one of Latin America’s top medical schools. Throughout his medical journey, Briones has also led research and public health efforts across Peru and the United States.

Briones has participated in numerous international clinical trials and published peer-reviewed research on cancer outcomes in HIV-positive populations, health equity, geohelminth infections in indigenous communities, and palliative care in hematologic malignancies. His bilingual fluency in Spanish and English strengthens his ability to serve diverse patient populations.
