DHR Health hosted a deeply moving graduation ceremony for the children of Bobbie Adame, a patient currently receiving advanced life support through ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Bobbie, hospitalized and unable to attend her children’s official ceremonies, watched proudly as her daughter Kaylynn and son Robert celebrated their academic milestones in her presence, surrounded by family, medical professionals, and community leaders.

Dr. Andrew Phillips, Intensivist and Medical Director of the ECMO Program at DHR Health, welcomed attendees and emceed the event. “There are few things more special to families than a graduation,” he said. “It’s not just a piece of paper—it’s a moment of achievement with your loved ones. We’re grateful to be a small part of that.”

Dr. Phillips also explained the life-saving nature of ECMO, a treatment used when even ventilators cannot supply enough oxygen to the body. DHR Health is the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley with an ECMO program, allowing patients like Bobbie to remain close to home rather than travel to Houston, San Antonio, or Dallas. “We think of ourselves as the Valley’s ECMO Center,” he said, recognizing the hospital’s specialists and staff for their commitment and expertise.

The ceremony included full graduation regalia—caps, gowns, and personalized certificates—for Kaylynn and Robert Adame. Another graduate, Jose Manuel Acosta Jr. from IDEA San Juan College Prep, was also honored. Each was acknowledged individually, and DHR Chaplain Father Mishael Koday offered a blessing.

Victor Garza, Senior Outreach Coordinator for the Office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, delivered remarks on behalf of the congressman. In a message addressed to the graduates, Gonzalez praised their perseverance: “Middle school and high school are not easy journeys. Your dedication and hard work have paid off. May this be just a stepping stone to even greater accomplishments.”

School officials from Rio Hondo ISD and IDEA San Juan College Prep attended, including Assistant Principal Crystal Zambrano, who guided the graduates in the traditional moving of the tassels from right to left, marking the formal transition to the next chapter of their academic lives.

One of the most emotional moments came when Bobbie Adame addressed the audience. She thanked the DHR Health team from her wheelchair for making the ceremony possible. “I truly wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for DHR and their ECMO specialists,” she said. “They go above and beyond—especially the nursing staff and doctors. They motivate me every day, even when I feel like I can’t get up or don’t want to do physical therapy.”

Fighting through emotion, she continued, “I missed two important milestones in my children’s lives, and DHR made it possible for me to be a part of them. I love the ECMO team. There has never been a bad day here because of them.”

The ceremony concluded with a cap toss and a heartfelt invitation for all guests to enjoy refreshments and cake. While celebratory, the event highlighted a deeper mission: ensuring that no parent has to miss a defining moment in their child’s life due to a medical crisis.

DHR Health’s ECMO graduation ceremony was a reminder of how patient-centered care can go beyond medicine. By honoring the physical and emotional well-being of its patients and their families, DHR demonstrated that healing also comes from human connection, empathy, and shared joy.
