McALLEN, Texas – At 19-years-old, Jennifer Cerda is already looking toward a future centered on caring for others, a goal inspired by the person who has always encouraged her the most: her mother.
Currently pursuing her Vocational Nursing certification at South Texas College (STC), Cerda hopes to one day use her nursing skills to care for her mother if she ever reaches a point where she can no longer care for herself.
“My mom is the person who has inspired me the most throughout my journey,” she said. “She became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) while raising three children and she pushed herself to become certified even though Spanish is her primary language. I really admire her for that.”
For Cerda, attending STC was initially a practical decision. Living in Donna and not having reliable transportation at the time, the college’s proximity to home made it a convenient option for her. However, what began as a convenient choice grew into an experience that has helped her develop personally and professionally.
Outside of the classroom, Cerda has found another way to connect with the STC community through her work-study position with the Mid-Valley Student Activities and Wellness department.
“Being part of a team has helped me develop my communication and teamwork skills,” she said. “I really enjoy being able to work with everyone.”
Her involvement at STC has also led her to become engaged with Student Government Association (SGA). During her first year, she attended meetings periodically and served as a senator. Although she is not serving in an elected position this semester, she plans to continue attending meetings as a member because she values having a voice in the college community and seeing fellow students advocate for their peers.
“I love how the students who are currently running for office advocate for other students,” she said. “They are willing to listen to what other students have to say and bring those concerns forward. I think it is important for students to have people who will speak up for them and make sure their voices are heard.”
While her STC journey has included meaningful experiences and new connections, it has also challenged her to become more accountable for her academic goals.
Her journey toward the Vocational Nursing program was temporarily delayed after she did not meet one of the program’s academic requirements, preventing her from applying during her intended application period.
Instead of allowing the setback to discourage her, she used it as an opportunity to reflect on how she was managing her time and responsibilities as a student.
For Cerda, the journey is about more than earning a credential. It is about following in her mother’s footsteps while creating a future where she can provide the same kind of care and support that has inspired her throughout her life.
