At just 20 years old, Jasmine Vega is paving her path in the medical field, pursuing an associate degree in Radiologic Technology at South Texas College. With a passion for health care and a drive to make a difference, Vega hopes to graduate by 2027.

“I wanted to do something in the medical field,” Vega said. “I heard so many people talk about radiology, so I checked the program out and decided it was a good fit for me.”

Vega’s next academic step includes taking Anatomy and Physiology classes, important courses that will prepare her for the rigorous journey ahead. As a first-generation college student, her dedication is an inspiration not only to her family, but also to herself.

“My advice to myself is to never give up, no matter how hard things get,” Vega shared.

Vega credits much of her motivation to her mother, who she describes as her biggest inspiration.

“My mom wakes up every morning to go to work and still finds time to help me when I need it. She’s always there to give me advice when I feel down,” Vega said.

Choosing STC was an easy decision for Vega, as it was close to home and offered her the opportunity to stay connected with her friends while pursuing her education.

“STC impacted me by helping me make new friends and become more outgoing,” Vega said.

Her time at STC has included her active involvement in extracurricular activities, becoming a member of several sports teams, including flag football, soccer, softball and sand volleyball. One of her favorite memories is a trip to College Station for a flag football tournament.

“I met so many new people and had so much fun,” she recalled.

Beyond her studies and sports, Vega is passionate about raising awareness for mental health.

“Don’t let your mental health define who you are as a person,” she advised. “Some days might be bad, and some days might be good, but trust me, they get better.”

Vega’s aspirations go beyond academic success. Her ultimate goal is to find a job she loves, one that allows her to help others and make a meaningful impact.

“I want to enjoy what I do every day and make a difference,” she said.

Vega has been able to set an example for her family, specifically her younger sister, who is currently attending Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Jasmine reflects on the shared experiences that have shaped their journeys.

Through perseverance, hard work and the support of her loved ones Vega is determined to achieve her dreams and inspire others to follow their own paths.

Her message to anyone facing challenges is simple yet powerful, “Keep going things will always get better.”
