EDINBURG, Texas –  Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, accounting for about one in five cancer deaths nationwide. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 226,650 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2025, and 124,730 people are expected to die from the disease. Each year, lung cancer claims more lives than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

Despite these concerning statistics, there is hope through earlier detection. The American Lung Association reports that annual screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans can reduce lung cancer deaths by up to 20 percent by identifying cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.

In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, observed every November, DHR Health is offering a $99 low-dose CT lung cancer screening now through December 31, 2025, to promote early detection and save lives. The special includes both the screening and radiologist interpretation and requires a referral from a health care provider. Eligible individuals include current or former smokers between the ages of 50 and 80, for most insurances. Individuals outside this age group who are current or former smokers are encouraged to speak with a health care provider about their options.

To support early detection and timely treatment, DHR Health combines advanced technology and expert care. If a low-dose CT scan identifies a suspicious nodule, the Eon artificial intelligence system helps flag potential findings for the care team. When further evaluation is needed, the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system enables pulmonary specialists to biopsy lung nodules with precision—providing patients with fast, accurate results and timely care.

These efforts have contributed to DHR Health’s dual designations as a Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer Screening and a Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer Care, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to innovation, quality, and patient-centered outcomes.

“Lung cancer doesn’t always cause symptoms early on, which is why screenings are so critical,” said Dr. Federico Vallejo, DHR Health pulmonologist and robotic-assisted bronchoscopist. “When we catch it early, we have a real opportunity to save lives. By using the latest technology and encouraging people to get screened, we can catch lung cancer earlier—when it’s most treatable.”

DHR Health encourages those at risk to take advantage of this limited-time promotion and prioritize their lung health through early screening.
