It’s well established that physical rehabilitation is a versatile and valuable form of treatment that can help improve physical function, reduce pain and enhance overall quality of life for individuals of all ages and activity levels.
“Physical therapy can help those recovering from a stroke or surgery regain mobility and independence,” says Ricardo Flores, System Rehab Administrator, South Texas Heath System. “Focused on restoring movement and function to injured or weakened areas, it helps improve range of motion, strength and balance, enabling individuals to perform daily tasks and participate in activities they enjoy.”
At the South Texas Health System McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, which officially opened in 2019, the stellar team of physical, occupational and speech therapists empower individuals to recover from injury or illness, manage chronic conditions and regain independence with confidence through customized treatment plans.
“Our therapists are trained to assess individual needs and develop personalized treatment plans that take into account the person’s age, activity level, medical history and specific goals,” says Flores. “This individualized approach ensures that our patients receive the most effective and appropriate care to help improve their quality of life.
In July 2025, the STHS McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center logged 3,207 patient visits, the most visits in a single month in the center’s six-year history.
“Earlier this year, our ambitious team of therapists had set a lofty goal of 3,000 patient visits in a single month after coming close to reaching that number in previous months,” says Flores. ”This past July, with dogged determination, the team exceeded their goal. Surpassing 3,000 patient visits is a true reflection of the team’s unwavering commitment to patient care, collaboration and excellence. I’m incredibly proud of this team and the heart they bring to everything they do.”
Launched in 2019 with only five full-time staff members, the STHS McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, it is home to a powerhouse team of more than 50 employees, all committed to delivering quality, compassionate multidisciplinary rehabilitation services across the Rio Grande Valley.
Additionally, the center has expanded its services to include specialty programs in neuro rehab, pelvic health, Parkinson’s disease, dysphagia, sports medicine, pulmonary health and orthopedics – each designed to meet the evolving physical rehabilitation needs of the ever-expanding Rio Grande Valley community.
“Our multidisciplinary physical rehabilitation team is committed to providing comprehensive patient care,” says Flores. “We offer an integrated approach that combines the expertise our physical, speech and occupational therapists to address complex needs and provide treatment that leads to better recovery and quality of life. It’s a collaborative approach that ensures our patients’ physical, psychological and social well-being is considered to improve outcomes.”
