Welcoming a baby into the world is always a reason to rejoice. But there’s extra special cause for celebration when a baby is born on a holiday, especially one as sweet as Valentine’s Day.

Weighing in at 6 lbs., 12 oz. and measuring 20 inches long, Little Olivia Veronica Rodriguez arrived at The Maternity Center at South Texas Health System Edinburg at 1:24 a.m. on Friday, February 14, making her the first baby delivered at an STHS facility on Valentine’s Day, a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

“I knew she would come around Valentine’s Day; I just didn’t think she would arrive on the day of love itself,” says proud mother Sandra Hernandez, who underwent an emergency C-section to welcome her child into the world. “But having her today is just so perfect since she is already so loved.”

Research shows an estimated 11,636 babies are born on Valentine’s Day annually, making Little Olivia’s arrival all the sweeter.

While Olivia was the first baby welcomed at an STHS facility on Valentine’s Day, The Maternity Center at STHS Edinburg and The Maternity at STHS McAllen anticipate the arrival of at least five more infants this holiday.

Staff members at The Maternity Center at both facilities are beyond grateful to be part of each family’s journey of welcoming a new bundle of joy into the world, working tirelessly to make the process as smooth as possible.

“Expecting a baby is an exciting time for moms-to-be and their families, and it’s truly an honor to be selected as their healthcare system of choice,” says NormaLinda Aguirre, BSN, RNC-OB, Director of Women’s Services & Nursery, Maternity Center at STHS Edinburg. “It’s our mission to provide personal attention to every patient and their family and bring their newborns into a safe and happy environment. To do that on Valentine’s Day is extra special!”

In addition to providing the highest level of individualized care, staff have gone the extra mile to make the day extra special for them with holiday-themed gifts, including a Baby’s First Valentine’s Day onesie, fresh flowers and a gift certificate for a massage for each of the moms donated by Spa La Posada.

A reflection of its dedication to providing expectant families and their newborns quality, compassionate care, South Texas Health System was named a recent Five-Star Recipient for C-Section Delivery, Hysterectomy and Gynecology Procedures. The awards are a testament of the healthcare system’s commitment to consistently deliver high-quality women’s healthcare and placing the organization in the upper echelon of hospitals for OB/GYN care nationwide.
