MISSION, Texas: DHR Health Level 1 Trauma Center recently teamed up with City of Mission firefighters and police officers to offer hands-on ATV safety training. This event was held at the city’s newest public safety building near the Bentsen Palm subdivision during the week of September 16, 2024.
“It’s important that we’re proactive in providing this type of training to our first responders, as we know they respond to many of these accidents,” said DHR Health Injury Prevention & Outreach Coordinator Cassandra Bravo.
The first responders began their training by completing an online safety course offered by the ATV Safety Institute at www.atvsafety.org. During the hands-on skills portion of the ATV training, they learned how to safely operate an ATV in various emergency situations. The training also covered how to handle common ATV-related injuries and how to prevent them. A total of three first responder groups from the city participated in the training.
In addition to Bravo, DHR Health Trauma Program Director Jennifer Volcy and DHR Health Director of Emergency Medical Services Daniel Tuttle were involved in the training. Bravo is the only certified instructor in the Rio Grande Valley authorized by the ATV Safety Institute to provide these lessons.
