Mega Doctor News

Graduate medical education is growing and developing in South Texas. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) and the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will announce the hiring of four founding program directors for the proposed residency programs in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery and family medicine anchored at DHR.

These programs will be under the sponsorship of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine until The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine attains accreditation.

Medical schools across the country have steadily increased admissions over the past several years.

But, the mounting lack of residency programs, at which physicians complete their medical training, is actually causing a decrease in the number of practicing physicians in the United States. More than 500 U.S. medical school graduates did not get matched to a residency program in 2013.

The number of graduates that are unable to enter a residency program is expected to continue to grow unless additional Medicare funding is made available or hospitals are able create positions for residents to complete their training.

The critical need for residency programs and the shortage of primary and specialty care physicians across the Rio Grande Valley prompted DHR to invest millions of dollars to create residency programs that students graduating from medical school can apply to starting in the fall of 2014.

On Friday, March 14, in a ceremonial signing, DHR and the UT Health Science Center will officially announce their affiliation and the development of graduate medical education in the Rio Grande Valley. It is during this ceremony that the public will be first introduced to the residency program directors.
