Red Cross Opens Shelters After Severe Flooding in South Texas

HARLINGEN, TEXAS – In coordination with emergency management partners, the American Red Cross serving South Texas has opened six shelters for families impacted by severe flooding. Red Cross disaster trained responders have mobilized to provide relief and comfort to impacted families.

“Shelters have been opened to provide a safe refuge for anyone whose home may have been impacted by recent severe flooding,” said Henry Van de Putte, Regional Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast. “Our volunteers stand ready to respond should additional assistance be needed.”

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family:

  • Prescriptions and emergency medications
  • Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
  • Important personal documents
  • Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, and other comfort items
  • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula, and toys
  • Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled
  • Chargers for any electronic devices you bring with you
  • Books, games and other ways to entertain your family and yourself
