Beyond increasing awareness of the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation, the annual ceremony will honor donors whose generosity has given others a second chance at life.
Providing healing and hope to individuals facing life threatening conditions that impair vital organ function, organ transplantation stands as one of the most important advances in modern medicine.
More than 103,000 men, women and children are currently on the national organ transplant waiting list, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and another person is added every eight minutes.
“Behind every name on the waiting list is a person, a family and a community hoping for a second chance at life,” says Deborah Meeks, MSN, RN, CCRN, CEN, Chief Nursing Officer, South Texas Health System (STHS) Heart. “By choosing to become an organ donor, individuals have the ability to turn tragedy into hope and save lives.”
Through organ, eye and tissue donation, one donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of up to 75 others, per the Health Resources and Services Administration, underscoring the lifegiving power of donation.
For the fifth consecutive year, the U.S. set a new record for organ transplants in 2025, with 49,064 performed nationwide, per UNOS.
“Each transplant represents far more than a medical milestone; it’s a story of hope made possible by an extraordinary act of selfless generosity,” said Meeks. “Donors and their families give patients the chance to live, heal and dream again.”
Despite record breaking increases in organ transplants, the demand for organ donation continues to far exceed the available supply, resulting in the deaths of approximately 17 eligible patients each day.
This National Donate Life Month, STHS is continuing its efforts to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and celebrate the lifesaving gifts of donors by hosting a special flag raising ceremony at STHS Heart.
Scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m., the ceremony will be held in partnership with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA), the Texas Donor Network and the San Antonio Eye Bank. The event will feature firsthand stories from recipients and donor families, along with the reading of a special City of McAllen proclamation commemorating April as Donate Life Month in the City of Palms.
“The gift of organ, eye and tissue donation goes far beyond saving lives; it changes them,” says Brenda Ivory, Chief Executive Officer, STHS Heart. “One decision can bring hope to families and strengthen entire communities. Donate Life Month is about uniting to raise awareness and inspire others to become donors and help those still waiting.”
Attendees are encouraged to wear blue and green to help spread the Donate Life message and promote the importance of registering as an eye, organ and tissue donor.
