Blood Donors Urged to Give from the Heart in February

Every day, Vitalant needs to collect about 5,300 donations to be ready for both routine and emergency patient needs including car accidents, cancer treatments, heart transplants and surgery for infants born with heart defects. Vitalant encourages all eligible blood donors to give from the heart to help meet an urgent need for patients in February, Heart Health Month. In addition to helping save patients’ lives, every blood donor receives a mini-physical checking their pulse and blood pressure and a cholesterol test. With each donation, donors can track their wellness information over time in their secure and confidential online portal account.

Type O negative can be used for any patient, and type O positive is also widely used because it is the most prevalent blood type in the population.

Donors who meet all eligibility requirements can give regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. Donors who’ve recovered from COVID-19 are eligible after a brief waiting period. Masks are required for all staff, donors and visitors.
