Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new cancer cases among women each year, making it the most common cancer among women aside from skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society.

Each year, there are nearly 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer, per the CDC, with about 43,700 women expected to die from breast cancer this year.

But steps can be taken to fight back against this disease.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, South Texas Health System is urging women in the Rio Grande Valley to “Think Pink” by prioritizing their breast health. Throughout the month, the healthcare system is hosting activities throughout its facilities to educate the community on the risks and warning signs of breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Leading into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, South Texas Health System will kick off its campaign with its annual Think Pink Parade, which takes place in the main parking lot at STHS McAllen, on Saturday, September 30 from 10:00 a.m. – noon, with decorating time designated from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. In addition to participation from local law enforcement agencies and STHS staff members, STHS is inviting members of the community to join the parade, which aims to remember the lives lost to breast cancer, celebrate those who have beat the disease and rally around those still in the fight. Participants are encouraged to show their support and help raise awareness for this important cause by decorating their vehicles in pink and driving them along the parade route around the hospital’s main parking lot. Prizes will be awarded to the best decorated vehicles in several categories, including: First Responders, Community/Car Club and STHS Staff. Following the parade, a short program featuring local breast cancer survivors will take place. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to visit with representatives from various STHS departments and community organizations about their programs and services, as well as get no-cost health screenings.

The Think Pink festivities will continue throughout the month with Mammo Mondays, held each week, where attendees can learn more about the screening options at South Texas Health System’s facilities, schedule an appointment and take home a special goodie bag.

Additionally, special pricing of $95 for 2D, $149 for 3D mammograms and $155 for bone density screenings will be offered throughout the entire month of October and November if appointments are scheduled prior to October 31, 2023.
