EBOLA Miscommunication Blamed To Electronic Record

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, where the first U.S. Ebola case is being treated, said late Thursday that ‘a flaw’ in its electronic health records system led to Thomas Eric Duncan initially being sent home instead of admitted on September 26, 2014.

Two days later, he was back with acute symptoms. In a report posted online, the hospital said its physician and nurses followed correct protocols, but a nurse’s note about Duncan’s recent travel in Africa did not automatically appear on the electronic record seen by the doctor. The system has already been modified ‘to increase the visibility and documentation of the travel question in order to alert all providers,’ the hospital said.
